US pet supplies retailer Petco has started off the new year by following through on its promise to remove all dog and cats treats made in China from its store shelves and website. The company confirmed the products’ removal from in an announcement made on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Many pet owners have become wary of treats made in China in recent years, due to concerns that treats imported from that nation have sickened large numbers of pets and are suspected of having killed more than 1,000 dogs in the US alone. Jerky treats from China have been of particular concern to dog owners.

Fellow pet products retailer and business rival PetSmart announced on Monday that it will pull Chinese made treats from its stores by March. The two major chains announced in May of 2014 that they would stop selling treats from China by 2015 and are now following through on those plans.
